The Churchill Garden Room

An adaptable, multi-use, flexible space for all the family

An adaptable, multi-use, flexible space for all the family

Our clients, Fleur and Eamonn, on The Churchill, were keen to adapt part of their garden to gain some much-needed extra living space for their family. We had several meetings prior to the commencement of the project to discuss their options, needs, and vision. Once we were all clear on that vision we were in a position to begin the work.

First of all, we moved a gate that was centrally positioned in their rear boundary fence to one side so that we could construct their new Garden Room snugly to the boundary but still enable access to the garden via the newly positioned gate.

Build

We like to work as efficiently as possible when building a Garden Room and this is evident from the start with our floor construction. See our Projects page for full construction details.

The base was constructed using a threaded rod and concrete pile system. The floor frame was manufactured from 75 mm x 100 mm treated timber and the wall frame structure was manufactured using 45 mm x 95 mm treated timber. The roof was manufactured using 125 mm x 45 mm treated timber.

Easy opening tri-fold doors

2 kW heater

Interior and exterior downlights

Small opening window

Extended Wifi

External finish

On the back and side elevations we fitted anthracite grey James Hardieplank cladding and on the front elevation we fitted western red cedar. Eamonn and Fleur wanted to maximise as much natural light as possible so we incorporated some large anthracite grey tri-fold doors to the front elevation. Anthracite grey fascia and soffit boards were fitted to finish the roof line and match the doors to complement the red cedar further still.

Due to where the Garden Room was positioned on the property and the limited space to facilitate digging a soakaway for the rainwater, we installed a 100 litre water butt to solve this issue. This also serves as an efficient means to water the garden plants.

Electrics

The Churchill has 4 double sockets as well as a 2 kW heater and wifi extender. Internally we installed 6 ceiling downlights and externally we installed 4 downlights in the soffit. All electrics in our Garden Rooms are installed by a qualified and certified electrician.

Flooring

We discussed flooring options. Fleur and Eamonn chose an oak laminate. Laminate is a very practical choice of flooring for a Garden Room due to its ability to be hardwearing. Lastly, we fitted and painted the skirting board to complete.

Extras

During the build Eamonn and Fleur asked if we could fit a small opening window to one side elevation for extra natural light and ventilation. Fortunately, we were able to accommodate this request and still deliver the finished Garden Room within our predetermined completion date.

We are really pleased with the work PMG (Pete Guerin) did for our garden room. We were impressed that Pete had all the construction, carpentry and decorating skills needed, just bringing in his previous work partners to help with electrics, plastering and on several days to join him for heavier lifting or two-handed work.
We welcomed the fact that Pete worked exclusively on our project. It was reassuring from start to finish that he didn’t try to balance work for us with other jobs. His clear commitment to the project gave us confidence in the planned schedule and his ability to deliver it to a very high standard on time. In fact, Pete completed a little ahead of his planned completion date estimate, which came as a bonus.
The PMG approach was flexible, dealing without fuss with one or two unexpected things that arose and to complete an additional requirement for a window that we thought of only near the end of the build.
Pete did a very tidy job – cleaning up after each day and then thoroughly at the end of the build.
We would certainly recommend PMG to anyone considering a similar project. We’ve had numerous compliments from neighbours and friends on the finished room. Altogether, it went very well indeed.
